Ilona Tambor in Condé Nast Traveller – September 2020
In summer 2020, Ilona Tambor illustrated silk scarves appeared once again in Condé Nast Traveller, this time as part of the magazine’s September issue.
The feature followed earlier appearances in the June and July/August issues, making the summer of 2020 an important early chapter in the story of the brand.
At the time, Ilona Tambor was also part of Condé Nast Traveller’s digital On The Move content, where the scarves appeared among selected fashion accessories and travel-inspired gifts.
A Summer of Editorial Features
The September appearance completed a sequence of Condé Nast Traveller features that began earlier that year.
For a young independent brand, seeing the illustrated scarves repeatedly within the pages of the magazine created an opportunity to introduce Ilona Tambor to a wider audience interested in travel, design and distinctive objects.
What connected the scarves naturally with that world was their sense of story. Each one began as an original drawing before being translated onto silk and transformed into something designed to travel, fold and move.
Illustrated Silk in a World of Travel
There has always been a natural relationship between a scarf and travel.
A silk scarf takes very little space, yet it can be worn in many different ways — around the neck, over the hair, across the shoulders or folded into a bag. The same piece can move easily between places and occasions.
With an illustrated scarf, that movement changes the artwork too. Different borders, colours and fragments of the drawing appear depending on how the silk is folded and where it is worn.
From Drawing to Wearable Story
The scarves featured in 2020 belonged to the early development of the Ilona Tambor collection, but the process behind them remains central to the brand today.
Every design begins with a hand-drawn illustration. The composition is then translated onto fabric, allowing something created on paper to take on movement and a new relationship with the person wearing it.
Today, that illustrated world extends across silk scarves, wool, cotton-silk and cashmere, while drawing remains the beginning of every design.
Looking Back at September 2020
The September Condé Nast Traveller feature remains part of the early press history of Ilona Tambor and marked the third magazine appearance during that summer.
Looking back at those pages now, they capture a particular moment in the development of the brand — when the illustrated scarf collection was beginning to find an audience beyond its own studio and online world.
The collections have changed since then, but the idea behind them has not: illustration first, followed by colour, fabric and the freedom to make the finished piece your own.
Three issues, one summer, and an early chapter in the Ilona Tambor story.
Each piece begins with a line.
