How to Wear a Silk Scarf
A silk scarf is one of those rare pieces that can be worn differently every time you reach for it. Folded around the hair, wrapped at the waist, transformed into a top or simply allowed to fall across the shoulders, the same scarf can take on an entirely different character.
For me, this versatility has always been part of the beauty of a silk scarf. Each Ilona Tambor design begins as an original hand-drawn illustration, so the way a scarf is folded also determines which details, colours and characters become visible.
Here are five ways to wear a silk scarf — from familiar classics to more unexpected ways of letting the artwork become part of what you wear.
Wear a Silk Scarf as a Headscarf
A silk headscarf has an enduring simplicity. Depending on how it is tied, it can feel polished, relaxed or slightly bohemian, while allowing the colours and details of the illustration to frame the face.
Fold a square scarf diagonally into a triangle and position the long folded edge across the top of your head. Take the two ends towards the nape of the neck and tie them gently underneath the triangular point.
Leave the back loose for a softer silhouette or tuck it underneath for a cleaner finish. Moving the scarf slightly further back on the head creates another, more relaxed variation.
Transform a Large Silk Scarf into a Dress
A generously sized silk scarf can move beyond being an accessory altogether. Draped around the body, it becomes a light and expressive layer for summer days, evenings away or time by the sea.
One simple approach is to secure one end around the neck and allow the remaining silk to fall across the body. Wrap the longer section around yourself and tuck or secure it so that the fabric falls naturally.
There is no need to make the silhouette too precise. Part of the appeal comes from allowing the silk to move freely and letting different areas of the illustration appear as the fabric falls.
A narrow belt or ribbon can be added at the waist when you want a little more structure.
Wear a Silk Scarf as a Top
A square silk scarf can also become a simple top, particularly during warmer months. It is one of the best ways to allow a larger section of an illustrated design to remain visible rather than disappearing within a series of folds.
Fold the scarf diagonally to form a triangle. Position the folded edge across the chest, with the triangular point facing down, then take the two ends around the body and tie them securely at the back.
The point can remain visible for the classic scarf-top silhouette or be tucked underneath for a cleaner line. Turning the scarf before folding it can also reveal an entirely different part of the illustration.
It is a simple reminder that a silk scarf does not need to be confined to the neck.
Tie a Silk Scarf Around the Waist
Worn at the waist, a silk scarf becomes a softer and more colourful alternative to a conventional belt. It works particularly well against denim, simple tailoring or a single-colour dress.
Fold the scarf lengthways several times until it forms a long narrow band. Thread it through belt loops or wrap it directly around the waist and finish with a loose knot.
Position the knot at the front, towards one side or at the back depending on the shape of the outfit. Leaving the ends slightly longer allows fragments of the illustration to remain visible as the scarf moves.
Drape a Large Silk Scarf Over the Shoulders
Sometimes the simplest way to wear a scarf is also the one that reveals the artwork most beautifully.
Open a large silk scarf fully and place it loosely across the shoulders. Wear it almost like a light cape, bring the ends towards the front or secure them gently depending on the silhouette you want.
This approach is particularly suited to larger illustrated scarves because there is space for the full composition to be seen. Birds, flowers, animals and fragments of landscape appear across the fabric rather than being hidden inside a fold.
Over a simple blouse, dress or knit, the scarf can become the focal point of the entire look.
A Scarf, Worn Your Way
There is no single answer to how a silk scarf should be worn. The same design changes every time it is folded, knotted or draped, revealing different parts of the illustration and creating a different relationship with what you are wearing.
Around the hair, across the shoulders, at the waist or transformed into something entirely different — the most interesting way to wear a scarf is ultimately your own.
Fold it, drape it, knot it or transform it — a silk scarf leaves space for personal expression.
Each piece begins with a line.
