In July 2020, Ilona Tambor took part in GNCCFonline, an online presentation bringing together contemporary designer-makers and artists across jewellery, fashion accessories, craft and objects for the home.

The event created a digital space for independent makers at a time when opportunities to encounter craft in person had become limited. For Ilona Tambor, it was another early opportunity to present hand-illustrated scarves within a wider world of contemporary design and making.

What connected the work was individuality: pieces created with a clear point of view, a visible relationship to the maker and a story that extended beyond a single season.

Contemporary Craft and Individuality

One of the qualities I have always valued in independent craft is the sense that the object retains something of the person who created it.

It may begin with a drawing, a material or an idea, but the finished piece carries traces of that process. It feels different from something created only to follow a moment or a trend.

That idea has always been central to Ilona Tambor. Every scarf begins with an original hand-drawn illustration before colour, composition and fabric gradually transform it into something designed to be worn.

Among Designer-Makers and Artists

GNCCFonline brought together 160 designer-makers and artists selected across a broad range of contemporary craft and design.

Being presented within that context placed Ilona Tambor alongside jewellery, fashion accessories and objects for the home — different disciplines connected by an emphasis on independent making and individual creative practice.

For a young brand, these early opportunities were important. They allowed the scarves to be seen not only as fashion accessories, but as pieces that begin with illustration and carry the visual language of the artist into something functional and wearable.

From Drawing to Something Worn

A scarf changes the moment an illustration moves from paper onto fabric.

Opened fully, the design can be seen almost as a complete image. Folded around the neck or draped across the shoulders, it becomes fragmented — only a border, a flower, an animal or a small area of colour may remain visible.

That transformation is part of what continues to interest me. The drawing is never completely fixed once it becomes something worn; the person wearing it creates another version of the composition each time.

Looking back, the event belongs to an early period in the development of Ilona Tambor, when the illustrated scarf collection was beginning to appear across independent craft events, editorial features and design platforms.

The collection has expanded since then, but the starting point remains the same: original drawing, followed by colour, fabric and the freedom for the finished piece to become part of someone else’s story.

Today, the illustrated world of Ilona Tambor extends across silk scarves, wool, cotton-silk and cashmere.

Events such as GNCCFonline remain part of the history behind that growth — moments when the work was presented within a wider community of contemporary makers and independent design.
