The Beauty of Diversity

The S/S 2022 collection began with creatures that do not exist in our world. I imagined animals made from unexpected combinations — different forms, colours and characters brought together as something completely new.

I called the collection The Beauty of Diversity.

The idea was to look beyond what feels familiar and celebrate difference rather than hide it. In these illustrations, there is no reason why seemingly impossible creatures cannot exist together.

Creatures from an Imagined World

I have always enjoyed creating animals that sit somewhere between reality and imagination.

For this collection, I pushed that idea further. Different characteristics meet in one creature, creating hybrids that could belong to another place, another time or simply to the world inside a drawing.

They are deliberately unusual. What might first appear strange becomes beautiful once you stop expecting everything to fit within familiar boundaries.

Looking Beyond Difference

The collection grew from a simple thought: difference is what makes the world interesting.

Nature itself is full of extraordinary shapes, colours and combinations. I wanted to exaggerate that freedom and imagine creatures without worrying about whether they could really exist.

Each one has something unexpected about it. Some details feel familiar while others seem to belong somewhere else entirely.

For me, that became the heart of the collection — not trying to make everything the same, but allowing every character to be completely itself.

From an Idea to an Illustration

Every creature started as an idea and then a hand-drawn sketch.

Drawing by hand gives me the freedom to change proportions, combine details and allow a character to develop without knowing exactly where it will end.

Once the individual elements are drawn, I develop them digitally, bringing together the composition and working with colour until the complete scarf begins to emerge.

This part of the process is always a balance. I want the illustration to be rich in detail when the scarf is opened, but also interesting when only a small part of it can be seen.

When the Drawing Becomes a Scarf

Once the illustration moves onto silk, the creatures begin to behave differently.

A complete character might be visible when the scarf is opened, but when it is folded or tied only a wing, an eye, a flower or an unexpected area of colour may remain.

I love this change. The scarf stops being one fixed picture and becomes something different every time it is worn.

Looking Back at S/S 2022

The Beauty of Diversity remains one of the collections where the idea and the characters grew together very naturally.

The hybrid creatures gave me freedom to invent without following the rules of the natural world, while still drawing inspiration from everything I find fascinating within it.

More importantly, the collection carried a simple idea that still feels relevant to me: beauty does not depend on everything being alike.
